St. Katharine Drexel was born into a wealthy family in Philadelphia in 1858. Katharine learned young that money could not shelter a person from pain and suffering. St. Katharine was inclined to help the Native and African Americans. She established a religious community, Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored. She founded Xavier University in New Orleans, the first Catholic University in the US for African Americans.
